Okay, I just finished a book that completely pulled me into another world, and I have to tell you about it. It's called '夢中緣' (Dream Romance) by Li Xiuxing, and it was published way back in 1715. Forget everything you think you know about old Chinese literature being dry or hard to read. This story is wild. It starts with a scholar who has a vivid, life-altering dream about his perfect soulmate. The catch? He has no idea if she's even real. The whole book follows his obsessive quest to find this woman from his dream in the waking world. It's a beautiful, frustrating, and sometimes funny look at destiny, obsession, and whether our deepest desires are guiding us or driving us crazy. Is she out there, or is he just chasing a fantasy? The tension had me turning pages (or well, scrolling) to find out. If you love a good romantic quest with a philosophical twist, you need to check this out.

I picked up '夢中緣' (Dream Romance) with a bit of curiosity—a love story from 1715? I was expecting something formal and maybe a little stiff. What I found was a surprisingly heartfelt and engaging novel that feels much more modern in its concerns than its publication date suggests.

The Story

The plot centers on a young, talented scholar named Li. One night, he has an incredibly powerful and realistic dream where he meets, falls in love with, and even marries a woman of breathtaking beauty and virtue. The experience is so intense that when he wakes up, he's heartbroken. The real world feels dull and empty compared to the perfection of his dream. Convinced this woman must exist somewhere, he becomes obsessed with finding her. He travels, asks questions, and examines every young woman he meets, comparing them to his dream ideal. His journey is full of near-misses, mistaken identities, and the constant, aching question of whether he's pursuing a real person or just a beautiful illusion created by his own mind.

Why You Should Read It

What really got me was how relatable the central conflict is. Haven't we all had a dream that felt so real it stuck with us all day? Li Xiuxing takes that universal feeling and stretches it to its absolute limit. The book isn't just a romance; it's a deep dive into the idea of fate versus fantasy. Is the dream a prophetic vision of a destined love, or is it a dangerous obsession that's preventing the hero from seeing the real people right in front of him? The characters around Li—his confused family, his pragmatic friends—react in ways that feel very human, which makes his single-minded quest all the more compelling and, at times, heartbreaking. The writing (in translation, in my case) is elegant but clear, focusing on emotion and action.

Final Verdict

This book is perfect for readers who love historical fiction but want something focused on personal emotion rather than grand political drama. It's also a great pick if you enjoy philosophical questions wrapped in a good story. You don't need to be a scholar of Chinese literature to appreciate it; you just need to be someone who's ever wondered about the line between dreams and reality, or searched for something perfect in an imperfect world. '夢中緣' is a hidden gem that proves some stories about the human heart are truly timeless.
